Does the county have your money? Get it by Sept. 1

Unclaimed Funds Image

Each year, thousands of dollars in unclaimed property with the Citrus County Clerk of Courts and Comptroller’s office sits waiting to be claimed.

After attempts to return the money to the rightful owners have been exhausted, the money is considered “unclaimed property.”

In order to help Citrus County residents and businesses locate unclaimed money, Clerk of Courts Angela Vick encourages everyone to regularly check www.citrusclerk.org for any money due to them, as well as the state's unclaimed property website at www.fltreasurehunt.gov.

Florida Statutes govern how the Clerk’s office handles this process. According to Florida Statute 116.21, any unclaimed court-related funds collected or deposited by the Clerk which remain unclaimed must be deposited into the Fine and Forfeiture fund established under Florida Statute 142.01.

Every July, the clerk's office publishes a list of people and businesses that have unclaimed money held by the office. Any person having, or claiming, any interest in such funds or any portion of them must file an Unclaimed Money Collection Affidavit with our office by Sept. 1. The link to the form and the listing of unclaimed money can be found on our website www.citrusclerk.org  under the Financial Services tab, or you can call 352-341-6424, option 2 for more information.
