A civil traffic infraction is a non-criminal violation and usually be disposed of by payment of a civil penalty, election to attend a driver improvement course, or election to attend a court hearing.  The following violations require a mandatory court appearance: violations involving an accident with serious bodily injury or a fatality, violations of leaving a child in a vehicle unattended, speeding in excess of 30 miles per hour over the speed limit or littering.
